Lincolnshire Hospitals Band

John Bowtell

John BowtellJohn is a former military bandsman where he was a member of The Band of the Coldstream Guards. He was  also a student at The Royal Military School of Music, Knellar Hall in1960. During this period his claim to fame was to play the Euphonium in the band when the music was recorded for Dads Army.

Apparently he has cheekily told people that he played for West Ham Football Club but he has later revealed that he played the Euphonium in the band that marched up and down during their matches at half time! Apparently it has also been said that he played at West Ham at the same time as Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst etc! Technically not a lie, he really did play, but with the band, not football!

His varied musical career has also seen him play with the Billy Smarts Circus Band at the Royal Albert Hall in the 1960s, Trooping the Colour at Horse Guards Parade and the BBCs Friday Night is Music Night. He then went on to expand his musical abilities and became Bandmaster of the British Airways Band for 3 years in the 1980's.

John is the Principal Euphonium player of the Lincolnshire Hospital’s Band and has recently relinquished his post of Deputy Conductor.

In 2008 John was presented with an award for his outstanding contribution to the band.
